BREAKING: Resolution Introduced in US Congress to Recognize October as Nigerian Heritage Month

WASHINGTON, D.C. — A resolution has been introduced in the United States House of Representatives supporting the recognition of October as Nigerian Heritage Month and celebrating the heritage, culture and contributions of Nigerians and Nigerian Americans.
According to official records from the U.S. Government Publishing Office (GovInfo), House Resolution 1546 was introduced on September 16, 2026, during the 119th Congress.
The measure, sponsored by Rep. Sanford D. Bishop Jr. of Georgia, was introduced with 16 original cosponsors and referred to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform for consideration.
The resolution seeks to highlight the contributions of Nigerians and Nigerian Americans to the United States while promoting greater awareness of Nigerian history, culture and heritage.
October holds particular significance for Nigerians worldwide because Nigeria celebrates its Independence Day on October 1, marking its independence from British colonial rule in 1960.
Nigerians and Nigerian Americans have built a notable presence across U.S. society, with contributions spanning healthcare, education, technology, engineering, business, academia, entertainment, public service and the arts. Nigerian culture has also gained wider international visibility through music, film, literature, fashion and cuisine.
The initiative comes amid longstanding ties between Nigeria and the United States, strengthened through diplomacy, trade, education, migration, investment and cultural exchange.
However, the introduction of H.Res. 1546 does not mean October has already been formally recognized as Nigerian Heritage Month by the House.
The official congressional record currently lists the measure as “Introduced in House,” meaning further congressional action is required before it can be described as adopted.
If adopted, the resolution would represent a formal expression of support by the House for recognizing October as Nigerian Heritage Month and honoring the contributions of the Nigerian-American community.
